Preventative maintenance can extend the life span of your roof. Follow these four steps to keep your roof in great shape and identify small issues before they develop into massive problems. The sooner you discover potential challenges, the sooner you can get them repaired and avoid further damage!

1. Clean your gutters regularly.

Neglecting your gutters can spell trouble for your roof. Over time, leaves, twigs, and debris can accumulate, causing blockages that prevent proper drainage. When water isn’t diverted away from your roof, it can seep into cracks and crevices, leading to moisture damage and even leaks inside your home. Regularly cleaning your gutters is a simple yet effective way to extend the life span of your roof. Aim to clean them at least twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall, to ensure optimal function and prevent potential costly repairs down the road.

2. Trim trees and foliage close to the roof.

When limbs touch your roof, they can trigger a chain reaction of problems. Limbs can scrape against your shingles, wearing them down prematurely. They also serve as an easy access point for critters. Nothing good comes from having limbs touching your home!

3. Check for leaks after an exceptionally hard rain.

Intense rain can expose vulnerabilities in a home. After a particularly strong rainfall, check your windows and entry points for any water. Also, walk around the exterior of your home to see if water is pooling or streaking anywhere. Look at the soffit, flashing, and any  to ensure it is waterproof and airtight.
