Preventative maintenance can extend the lifetime of your roof. Follow these four steps to keep your roof in great shape and identify small issues before they develop into massive problems. The sooner you discover potential challenges, the sooner you can get them repaired and avoid further damage!

1. Clean your gutters regularly.

Gutters can’t keep water away from your home if they’re clogged with leaves and debris! Keep them open so that water won’t pool. Gutters filled with debris are also a breeding ground for bacteria and pests, so keeping them clear pays dividends.

2. Trim trees and foliage close to the roof.

When limbs touch your roof, they can trigger a chain reaction of problems. Limbs can scrape against your shingles, wearing them down prematurely. They also serve as an easy access point for critters. Nothing good comes from having limbs touching your home!

3. Check for leaks after an exceptionally hard rain.
Intense rain can expose vulnerabilities in a home. After a particularly strong rainfall, check your windows and entry points for any water. Also, walk around the exterior of your home to see if water is pooling or streaking anywhere. Look at the soffit, flashing, and any caulking to ensure it is waterproof and airtight.
